FDA just said no to fast-tracking AI radiology tools. And that's the right call.

A proposal to create an expedited regulatory pathway for AI radiology tools — one that would have allowed certain AI diagnostic algorithms to reach clinical deployment with significantly reduced evidence requirements — was rejected by FDA following an extended review process and significant pushback from clinical and patient safety advocates.

📊 The proposal had genuine supporters within the radiology and digital health communities. The argument for expedited review was grounded in a real frustration: the current FDA clearance timeline for AI diagnostic tools can stretch to 18 to 24 months, during which time potentially beneficial tools are unavailable to clinicians and patients who might benefit from them. The regulatory lag creates real costs, and the expedited pathway was framed as a mechanism to reduce those costs.
