CMS just dropped a bombshell on Medicare Advantage plans. Here's who wins and who loses.

On April 2, CMS finalized sweeping changes to the Star Ratings methodology for Medicare Advantage plans effective for the 2027 rating year — changes that affect how plans are evaluated, how quality bonus payments are calculated, and which plans are positioned to grow or shrink their Medicare Advantage market share.

📊 Medicare Advantage Star Ratings are not an academic exercise. They are directly tied to quality bonus payments that add billions of dollars annually to MA plan revenue, and they are increasingly influential in beneficiary plan selection decisions. Plans with 4 or 5 stars receive quality bonuses and can use them to offer richer benefits that attract more enrollees. Plans that fall below 4 stars lose the bonus and the competitive advantage it funds. The stakes of the Star Rating methodology are enormous.
