CMS just froze $1.3B in Medicaid payments to California. If you lead a health center or oversee Medicaid billing, this affects you.

📊 The withhold is not a penalty. It is a compliance mechanism. CMS identified that California's Medicaid managed care plan payment system contained errors in how encounter data was being submitted and validated — errors that affected the accuracy of capitation rate calculations and, by extension, the federal matching funds California was receiving. The $1.3 billion represents the federal share of payments CMS determined were potentially miscalculated pending a comprehensive audit.

California is not unique in having Medicaid encounter data problems.
