🧠 For years, hospitals and imaging centers have been adopting AI diagnostic tools in a largely unstructured way. A vendor demonstrates a tool. A radiologist evaluates it informally. The hospital negotiates a contract. The tool goes live with minimal ongoing performance monitoring. The governance framework — if it existed at all — was whatever the individual institution decided to create on its own.
The American College of Radiology changed that in 2026 with the publication of its AI governance framework, the most comprehensive standard the specialty has produced for the deployment and monitoring of AI diagnostic tools.
